Peanuts belong in a suitable mesh feeder

Offer plain bird-food peanuts in rigid mesh that suits the purpose, and inspect the mesh as carefully as the contents.

The container is part of the choice

Peanuts should be offered in a suitable rigid mesh feeder, not loose whole nuts on a flat surface. Use a product intended for wild-bird peanuts and follow its instructions. An improvised bag or piece of netting is not an equivalent container.

Buy peanuts sold for wild-bird feeding from a reputable supplier. Salted, flavoured or coated snack nuts are a different product. Check the label and condition rather than assuming anything called a peanut belongs outside.

Check every part of the mesh

Look along the seams and around the base for broken wires, rust and sharp points. The closure should secure properly and the hanging point should support the loaded feeder. A damaged mesh cylinder is not worth retaining just because most of it remains intact.

Avoid modifying the opening size yourself. The feeder must allow birds to take suitable pieces while retaining the nuts as intended. If you cannot identify the design or its intended food, choose a documented alternative instead of guessing from a photograph.

Use the seasonal window

Current BTO advice limits seed and peanut provision to November–April, with a pause during May–October. Store the clean, dry feeder during the pause rather than leaving a small forgotten quantity inside it. Set a reminder if several household members share the feeding routine.

Within the feeding period, offer only what the garden uses promptly. A tall feeder does not have to be filled to its rim. If nuts remain for too long, reduce the amount rather than waiting for an empty container before taking action.

Inspect food and equipment together

Check the peanuts for dampness, mould and unusual changes before refilling. Discard questionable material securely; do not scatter it elsewhere for animals less visible from the house. Empty old contents so fresh nuts are not simply placed above an ageing layer.

Dismantle, clean, rinse and dry the feeder according to the applicable guidance and product instructions. Mesh has many contact points, so a quick splash over the outside is not the same as reaching its corners and base.

If a bird appears unwell, stop feeding and follow disease guidance regardless of how recently the feeder was washed. Good equipment helps support a manageable routine, but it cannot make continued gathering risk-free during an outbreak.
